Horikoshi recently spoke to Viz Media, celebrating the release of My Hero Academia: You’re Next and the manga’s impending grand finale. When asked about the unexpected popularity poll results, he revealed that he was “pleasantly surprised” by Shoji’s climb to the top! Who else is loving Shoji’s new found fame?

“I was pleasantly surprised by Shoji’s rise in the rankings. It made me really happy,” Horikoshi shared about the recent popularity poll. “As an author, I try not to get too emotionally involved and keep a distance, but seeing Shoji’s popularity made me genuinely happy.” He even confided in his editor that Shoji’s unique looks and limited appearances in the story didn’t typically qualify as ‘handsome’ but that he drew Shoji thinking he was really cool!
